As the year comes to an end, it brought with it a plethora of new devices being launched by the veteran companies, new companies making their mark felt in the market, Smartphones being introduced at minimum prices and the Giants like Apple, Samsung and Nokia coming out with their greatest and latest Smartphones till date, to raise the bar for its users.
Welcome here, to one of the biggest Smartphone battles of 2014 with Apple launching its latest player – the iPhone 6 and Samsung coming up with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha to give a rigid fight to their rival. This was a battle not anticipated by many as the Samsung S5 was supposed to be the natural opponent pitted against iPhone 6, but following disappointed sales, the company had to rethink and brainstorm before coming out with Samsung Galaxy Alpha to throw down the gauntlet to their arch rival.
Both the gadgets are treated with top-notch specs and offers excellent all-round performance which makes perfect sense to pit them against each other to see who comes out on top.
Both Apple and Samsung have worked judiciously to pump up their designs and make it more attractive. Both of them have a compact size, are comfortable to hold, and are lightweight and impressively premium in nature. Technically, iPhone 6 is a smidgen taller, thicker, wider and heavier than Alpha but that is hardly noticeable. On the other hand, Alpha has the best design Samsung has come up with till date, thanks to its metal trim bezel and solid construction. However, Alpha’s body is still made up of plastic in comparison to iPhone’s uni-body aluminum casing.
Both Samsung Alpha and iPhone 6 offers a 4.7 inch screen but employs different resolutions and display technologies. iPhone 6 comes with a 750×1334 Retina display with a pixel density of 446 ppi which makes the screen brighter and detailed and thus, more pleasing. Its LED-backlit IPS LCD screen is made of shatterproof glass and oleo phobic coating. Comparatively, Samsung Galaxy Alpha fails a bit in comparison. It has a 720×1280 super AMOLED display with a pixel density of only 320ppi which is still nice, but the fact that it resorts to use PenTile matrix pixel arrangement, does not make the display as sharp as an iPhone 6.
In the software department, the Samsung GalaxyAlpha and iPhone 6 both remains a real treat. Apple has doubled the power of its A series of ARM-based chips. The dual-core 1.4 GHz Cyclone CPU and quad-core PowerVR GX6450 GPU makes the phone really fast and racy. It works on a 1GB RAM having the usual internal storage options of 16/32/64/128 GB according to the user preferences. Samsung Galaxy on the other hand has enough ammunition to match iPhone’s performance. Alpha comes with a 2GB RAM and Samsung’s own Exynos 5 Octa 5430 chipset which is slated to outpace the Snapdragon 805, accompanied with a quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A15 processor and Android KitKat 4.4.4 operating system.
The camera is one of the most important battlefields to compare Smartphones. iPhone has stepped up from 8MP in its last 3 iPhones to 13MP with Exmor IMX220 camera sensor. The secondary camera has 1.2MP and video recording at 1080p. Samsung has however, decreased from 16MP in the Galaxy S5 to 12MP HDR, with a 2.1MP selfie-friendly secondary camera (a feature Apple has to match) and video recording at 2160p.
Even in the battle of the battery performance, both stands well matched. Apple iPhone 6 has non-removable Li-Po 1810 mAh battery but will depend heavily on the efficiency of the A8 chip and iOS 8 to compensate the larger screen and higher resolution. Samsung Alpha on the other hand, has a Li-Ion 1860 mAh battery but will hope that the greater efficiency in its Exynos 5 Octa 5430 chip will make a significant difference.
The battle of the best smartphone in town just got steamier and that is good news for all the tech enthusiasts. On second thoughts, one may feel that iPhone 6’s Touch ID finger print sensor is much preferable when compared to Alpha, but the latter is packed with notable amenities like a sensor to measure your pulse rate and removable battery, to make things even.
With the latest flagships flaunting their 5-inch screens, it is a relief to have two new classy entrants in the 4.7 inch displays which people will find worth breaking their banks on. How they are accepted by the public is yet to be known and who stands up as the ultimate winner is still a debatable topic.
